7/1/25: Negotiations Session #1
We had a very successful and productive first day of bargaining! We reached Tentative Agreements (TAs) on the following Articles:
- Article 1: Union Representation\
- Article 2: Grievance and Arbitration\
- Article 14: Health and Safety\
- Article 15: Staffing Committee\
- Article 16: No Strike/No Lockout\
- Article 19: Management Rights\
- Article 20: Effects of Headings\
- Article 21: Racial Justice, Equity and Inclusion\
- Article 22: Duration and Renewal of Agreement\
- Action Item on timing for implementation
You can read the specific language in our proposals linked below. Most of the language we agreed to is the same as what is in the current SEIU contract at Methodist. Where it says “extant agreement” that means that it’s the same as the existing contract—you can view that contact here.
Union Proposal 1 - 10am
Union Proposal 2 - 2pm
Union Proposal 3 - 345pm
Employer Response
It’s GREAT NEWS that we came to tentative agreements on so many articles on our first day of negotiations. While non-economic, they are all critically important.
We did not make a proposal on seniority as we are still waiting on more information from the Employer.
There are 4 non-economic proposals that are still on the table that the hospital has rejected:
- We proposed that we have the option to temporary decrease FTE while in school or other circumstances for up to 18 weeks. The current contract at Methodist has that language, but for 16 weeks. Many semesters are 18 weeks long, which is why we want 18 weeks.
- We proposed to add language to protect members who are immigrants in the case of ICE raids or changing rules from the federal government.
- We proposed language to add language about floating—that floating will be on a rotating basis in reverse order of seniority-- meaning everyone takes a turn, starting with the least senior, that we won’t be floated more than once per shift, and that HUCs with over 20 years of experience (who work 20+ hours a week) do not have to float.
- We proposed that HUCs in training shall not be counted towards are staffing levels, so that we can adequately train new hires.
FLYER Union Proposed Language on Floating, Training, 18 Week FTE Reduction - Article 4
FLYER Union Proposed Langauge on Immigration Matters - Article 21
We made our best arguments as to why we believe the hospital should agree to the language we proposed, but their position is currently “no”. We know that the six of us on the bargaining team can't win this language alone. It's going to take ALL of us to convince the hospital to agree to this language. Please connect with your Worksite Leader to let them know how important these proposals are to you, and learn how you can help.
- Our next negotiating date will be Monday, July 28th
- We will also negotiate on Wednesday, August 13th
We will have Zoom updates at 5 pm at the end of both days, please join those calls!
