MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Allina Hospice nurses represented by SEIU Healthcare Minnesota & Iowa have filed a ten-day notice to conduct a seven-day unfair labor practice (ULP) strike beginning September 11 and continuing through September 17, 2026, following continued roadblocks in their effort to reach a fair contract with Allina Health.

More than 60 hospice nurses who provide critical end-of-life care in patients' homes, assisted living communities, and skilled nursing facilities voted unanimously to authorize the strike on Friday, August 21, 2026, after more than a year of contract negotiations failed to produce meaningful progress on key worker concerns.

Linda Cadwell, an Allina Hospice Licensed Practical Nurse and bargaining team member, commented on behalf of the whole group of more than 60 nurses: “We’ve been bargaining for almost a year and a half, while nurses continue to work excessive overtime without feeling valued or heard by Allina. We hope this strike makes them recognize the reality of the work we do every day. Our patients aren’t productivity points on a spreadsheet. They are people who deserve the time and care that only nurses can provide.”

The strike notice follows a one-day ULP strike held on July 6, 2026, during which nurses called attention to issues including the denial by Allina of two raises for the hospice nurses, their overall compensation model, staffing levels, caseloads, and working conditions they say directly impact their ability to provide high-quality hospice care.

Allina continues to oppose creating a fair compensation system that would pay nurses extra for extra work, a core demand of union nurses who are often required to work long, irregular hours. Allina also refuses to pay salaried RNs any holiday premium whatsoever when they are required to work on holidays. And despite Allina wanting to continue to treat the RNs as salaried, it does not allow hospice nurses the opportunity to flex their schedules, a core part of how salaried employment is supposed to work. For example, the union nurses cannot work a short day after working a series of long days.

The strike is scheduled for September 11-17, 2026. Nurses will picket outside Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis each day from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a daily rally at 12:00 p.m.
